HUNGERFORD ARCADE HAS A BIG CHRISTMAS TREE

CHRISTMAS TREE
Everyone at Hungerford Arcade wish to give a very big thank you to Trevor Elliman and his daughter, Jess for the magnificent Christmas tree which they not only donated but erected at the garden entrance to the Arcade for us and our customers to enjoy.  Trevor and his lovely wife Jane are partners in their own company, The Vintage Garden and have a unit in the Arcade (unit 12) selling vintage tools and country items.

Trevor and Jane are members of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association.  Trevor grows trees of many different types and sizes. Jane makes beautiful handmade foliage wreaths - Garlands (mainly to order) - Mistletoe hand picked by them in Somerset. Daughter Jess, is a very clever, beautiful young lady and is a big success in the Young Farmers Association.  She is clever at school, is a great cook and loves being a part of her parents' business.  One of the things that Jess loves to do is drive her dad's tractor!

HUNGERFORD ARCADE: SANTA COMES TO TOWN

SUNDAY 1st DECEMBER 2013
THE SPECTACULAR HUNGERFORD
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS WILL BE SWITCHED ON AT 6.00 P.M.

We have been very excited this week at Hungerford Arcade because, this is it folks, the countdown to Christmas officially starts in Hungerford this Sunday, 1st December at 6.00 p.m. The celebratory event will start at around 5.00p.m and will go on until at least 6.30 p.m.  This year the great "Switch-On" will be performed by Lt. Col. Stefan Crossfield of 6 Close Support Battalion, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, a regiment having a very close bond with Hungerford.

There will be music with the Hungerford Town Band; refreshments will be available and I am also reliably informed that there will be a Hog Roast if you are feeling a little peckish! The children from the local schools will be lining the streets with their family and friends for that magic moment - the great "Switch-On" and not forgetting the great man himself -
 Father Christmas!
Hungerford is famed for its Christmas lights so do come along, the atmosphere is electric and one you will remember for a very long time!

HUNGERFORD ARCADE: ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA

QUEEN'S ESCORT

Hungerford Arcade has had many Royal visitors and those connected with them.  However, it was a first to have the Queen's Escort who served on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

David Bateman (now Lord David F.C. Bateman) joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 and served until 2008, serving some of that time aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia as the Queen's Escort.  Britannia was his home and his country wherever she went in the world.  David and his wife, Dorothy even had their marriage Banns read on the Royal Yacht and her Majesty took a keen interest and kept up to date asking David if all is in order with the wedding preparations.

David served as a Medic in Afghanistan in 2006 and due to his injuries has reluctantly retired.

All of us at Hungerford Arcade send our very best wishes to Lord David and Lady Dorothy Bateman.

DECOMMISSIONING

Because Britannia played such an important role in the public and private lives of the Royal Family for over four decades, it is no surprise that her decommissioning was a sad day for all.

HUNGERFORD ARCADE AND MORE OF THE DOLLS HOUSE

Langdon Hall
The country seat of Lady Langdon

On the 18th May 2013, I published Part II of Leonard Martin's stunning dolls house which took him 26 years to build.  As it was being exhibited and was too heavy to move to take further photographs, Len said he would send the photos onto me as soon as Langdon Hall was  back home.  This he did and Hungerford Arcade is very proud to release these further pictures which complete the interior of this beautiful house.

Langdon Hall
The country seat of Lady Langdon
“Welcome to the world of miniature”

This elegant country house comprises of the following:

 Two fine reception rooms, both boasting ornate, gilded plaster
ceilings and handsome fireplaces.

 Two exquisite bedrooms each having their own, private en-suite
bathroom.

 The scrubbed and functional kitchen is located on the ground floor,
at the rear of this impressive home and is certainly the hub of the
household.

 The grand marble floored entrance hall leads to a lavish stairway
and then up to a gallery landing which is lit by a spectacular crystal
chandelier.

Langdon Hall was designed and built by Leonard Martin over
a period of 26 years

and at a cost of approximately £6,000.

The GreenRoom en-suite Bathroom

The bathroom of the green room is laid with approximately 68 real slate tiles

The Red Room en-suite Bathroom
The Kitchen

The kitchen floor is real slate and there are approximately 100 pieces. The chimney breast has approximately 480 real miniature bricks , all fitted by hand. All the furniture including the all delicious food on the table I made by hand. The scullery maid was hand made for me.
The door on the left leads to the dining room and the door to the right leads into the sitting room.

HUNGERFORD ARCADE AND BEAUTIFUL BRIDE, AIMEE

FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD

I just had to share with you this lovely e-mail sent by Helen Cubitt, together with a photograph of her beautiful daughter, Aimee on her wedding day.  Hungerford Arcade is truly a 'world' beater! Thank you Helen for sharing your daughter's special day with us.

All of us at Hungerford Arcade wish Aimee and her husband every happiness in their new life together.
Rita

"Hi,
Just five days before my daughter planned to get married and she still hadn't found the jewellery she wanted to wear with her vintage wedding dress. This is despite searching shops in Perth, Australia where she lives and a visit to Hong Kong and then to London to see friends! Living near Hungerford I just had a feeling the Arcade would come up trumps and you did!
I'm sending you a photo of Aimee wearing a beautiful single drop diamond on a gold chain and Art Deco earings which delicately drop from a single gold stud. Thank you so much and for being so helpful with her choices. As you can see, she was a stunning and very happy bride.
Helen Cubitt"

HUNGERFORD ARCADE: MILITARY VEHICLES

VINTAGE MILITARY VEHICLES
AT
HUNGERFORD ARCADE RAISING
MONEY FOR THE
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
POPPY APPEAL

It was a very cold but thankfully sunny day when the military vehicles arrived outside Hungerford Arcade for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.  The vehicles created a lot of attention and looked magnificent in the sunshine.  Their owners dressed in period military uniforms the whole scene looked very authentic.  Adults and children alike were walking around talking with the owners and gave generously to the Poppy Appeal.  I will be focusing on one vehicle at a time, spread over a couple of weeks as they do have war history and someone out there may know one of these vehicles personally.  I have taken pictures of the numbers painted on each vehicle which are genuine.  If you do know one, please do let us know.

The first vehicle featured is a M3A1 White Scout Car which has a V8 side valve 16 litre engine. This scout car was with the USA 2nd Armoured Corp who liberated Belgium in 1945! The vehicle remained in Belgium until last week when it was purchased by Paul Gannawry and brought back to England.  Paul belongs to the part of living history group called "The Garrison".  They carry out reinactments and fire real artillery blank shells.  If this vehicle rings any bells with you, we would love to know

All of us at Hungerford Arcade would like to say a big thank you to the the Military Vehicles Trust and the Kennet Valley Military Vehicles Trust for making this event possible and for all the money raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
